Overview

Develop safe practice in diagnostic and examination skills for ear care in an area that attracts a high level of litigation. Includes an hands on workshop in ear irrigation (syringing).

Content

  •  Review of anatomy and physiology

    Examination of the ear using an otoscope

    Common ear problems:-

    • foreign bodies

    • earache

    • infection

    • earwax blockage (cerumen impaction)

    Ear irrigation (formally known as Ear Syringing)

    Risk assessment

    Practical workshop

    Complications

Aims and outcomes

  • Be able to correctly use an otoscope for examining the ear.

  • Identify common minor ear abnormalities and ailments.

  • Understand treatment of minor ear problems using best practice rationales.

  • Correctly irrigate an ear for cerumen impaction and be aware of the complications.
