Presentation 2: The challenge of safeguarding children with neurodevelopmental disorders
Identifying safeguarding issues in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and understanding when and what to investigate can be complex. These children are more vulnerable to abuse, neglect and bullying because of their special needs. Their difficulties in communication and in understanding body language and social signals may lead to misinterpretation of other’s motives. Perpetrators of abuse may include peers, immediate or wider family, or friends, professionals and volunteers. Professionals should be aware that changes in behavior may be manifestations of deep distress which the child is unable to express verbally. This session will highlight some ‘red flags’ in presentations and suggest management options.
Delivered by Dr NV Tiwari, Named Safeguarding GP Hertfordshire and West Essex ICS, Locum Consultant Safeguarding and Medical Education Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation Trust.
