Nursing in general practice: Foundation Knowledge and Skills for General Practice
Who should attend this course?
This course is intended for qualified nurses or registered nursing associates who have recently gained employment within the general practice setting.
Course aims
The course will enable nurses to gain the key knowledge and skills necessary for safe and effective nursing practice within primary care so that they can contribute effectively to the achievement of practice targets.
Course content
This course explores the role of the nurse in general practice and their professional responsibilities in relation to quality assurance, health and safety and infection control.
Topics will include but are not limited to:
The current nature and organisation of general practice
Transition to general practice
Working in general practice and treatment room management
Safeguarding
Communication and history taking
Multidisciplinary teams
Common mental health conditions
Population health and health promotion
Introduction to Long term conditions
Monitoring and management of: Asthma and COPD, Cardiovascular disease, Dementia care and support for carers and Diabetes
Cervical cytology with access to a named mentor
Travel health
Childhood immunisation
Wound care
Where is the course taught and by whom?
The course will be delivered through blended learning, integrating e-learning activities with on-campus sessions. Students will need access to a suitable personal computer and a reliable Internet connection (broadband is recommended). Most modern PCs or Macs (less than three years old) should be adequate. For any IT-related queries or additional support, an e-learning technologist employed by
the School is available to assist and provide advice. The course is taught by lecturers from the primary care team, including experts in general practice, and the management of long-term conditions.
Pre-requisites
Participants will need to be NMC registered nurses or NMC registered nursing associates, recently employed within General Practice. They must be available to attend all the required taught days. A DBS check obtained within the last 3 years is also required.
