New to Practice Programme

The new to practice programme is currently closed to new applications.  Details of future first five opportunities will be shared when available.

In this section you can find information on the New to Practice Programme which is available to GPs and GP Nurses who are new to practice, working in the Hertfordshire and West Essex ICS.

It is a two-year programme of support, available to all newly-qualified GPs and nurses working substantively in general practice, with an explicit focus on working within and across a Primary Care Network (PCN).

Funding is available to release eligible GPs and GPNs to carry out the CPD sessions on this programme each year. Locums are welcome to join the elements of the programme, although will not receive funding to attend.

The CPD sessions are calculated on a pro rata basis, for example a 9 session week would give you 1 funded CPD session per week.

If you are already enrolled in the New to Practice Programme then we have compiled some useful resources to support you on your new to practice journey. These resources can be found by clicking on each of the topics below:

Our local new to practice programme has been developed using the NHSE/I national initiative framework to provide a programme of support to all newly qualified GPs and GPNs who have qualified within the last twelve months and are working in a substantive role in primary care in the Hertfordshire and West Essex ICS.

Those that decide to take up the offer receive funded mentorship and funded CPD opportunities of one session per week (pro rata) for up to two years. This is designed to develop experience and support transition into the workforce as well as to discuss practice management skills, quality improvement, remote working and leadership.  New to practice fellows will also benefit from access to networking opportunities, facilitated by our First5 Leads and GP nurse tutors.
