About

Dr Fabienne Smith - Named GP for Safeguarding Children in Hertfordshire will present two sessions introducing ICON. Babies cry you can cope.

Coping with a crying baby can be very stressful for parents. Serious Case Reviews show that crying is the main trigger for babies being shaken. Research has shown that public health campaigns educating new parents and caregivers in coping with their baby's crying can reduce rates of abusive head trauma by up to 75%. The six-week postnatal check is the ideal time to enquire with parents and carers about their babies crying as infant crying hits a peak at 6-8 weeks of age. (RCGP Child Safeguarding Toolkit)

ICON is an evidence-based programme being rolled out across the ICB. It consists of a minimum of five brief ‘touchpoint’ interventions that reinforce the simple message making up the ICON mnemonic and is delivered by different professionals giving the same consistent message to parents and carers.

  • Infant crying is normal, it will stop.

  • Comfort methods will sometimes help, the crying will stop.

  • Its Ok to walk away if the baby is safe and the crying is getting to you.

  • Never ever shake or hurt a baby.

The webinars will contribute to level 3 participatory safeguarding children ICD requirements. All clinical staff are welcome to attend but Practice Safeguarding Children Leads are particularly encouraged.
